About Debut

Co-founded in 1991 by siblings Lee Osterhout-Kaplan and Gregg Osterhout, Debut Theatre Company is Northern Colorado’s only year-round, nonprofit youth arts organization that prioritizes hands-on learning in a troupe-structure environment. This unique approach fosters an environment where students collaborate and work as a team, problem-solve, think creatively, and communicate effectively with their fellow actors. “Theatre for young people, by young people,” is more than just a motto – it encompasses our belief that learning is best done by doing and that every individual’s contribution is valued, regardless of the size of their part.

At Debut, we focus on classic literature and pride ourselves on exposing audiences to timeless stories with valuable messages, encouraging a love of reading and storytelling. We keep ticket prices low and classes affordable so that our students and audiences can leave enriched, inspired, and eager to continue engaging with the arts. Our work doesn’t end when the show closes – students and alumni give their time and talent back to Debut and to other arts organizations, strengthening the arts culture of our community.

We believe that pride and confidence grow from active involvement in the arts and that being a part of something bigger than yourself can change the way a person views themselves and the world. This belief has led Debut Theatre Company to produce well-rounded, open, and empathetic artists and human beings for nearly 34 years, shaping the artistic and cultural future of Fort Collins while shaping the lives of young people.

Theatre & Community

The impact of the arts extends beyond entertainment and individual skill-building; it is fundamental to a healthy, connected community. Research confirms that communities are increasingly realizing the importance of theater to children's development, recognizing theaters for young audiences as worthy of respect. Studies show that the arts can be a vehicle to reduce discrimination and prejudice; to promote understanding and education; to open minds and expand the sense of self; and to foster an appreciation for others. Furthermore, research suggests that attending live theater is a communal experience that contributes to improved mental health.

Ultimately, we believe that investing in youth theatre is an investment in the growth of individuals and the health of the community. Not only is it beneficial, but it’s also so much fun!

A Place to Belong

Debut Theatre is dedicated to fostering a powerful sense of belonging and community. We create a safe and fun space where young people can express themselves freely as they develop and grow. We believe in cultivating a family atmosphere, where students learn from and feel a sense of responsibility toward one another. Our hallmark troupe structure emphasizes collaboration over competition, ensuring that every student's contribution is valued and understood as essential to the success of the team. Students are encouraged to learn from and inspire their peers, benefiting from positive peer role models and mutual support. This supportive community environment is crucial for individual growth and personal exploration.
