Stage Combat & Swordplay

The fights, duels, and other "cooperative violence" in theater can be a thrilling denouement, a chaotic laugh-fest, or a moment of absolute heartbreak, and they are a fun challenge for any fight director. But a good fight director also knows that these moments of violence require skill, technique and practice to make them safe and effective. Join professional fight director, actor, and theater instructor Ambrose Ferber as we learn not only the technique and skills behind a stage fight, but also go beyond logistics and understand how that fight fits into the world of the play, and how stories are impacted by moments of physical action. Students will learn multiple weapons, including unarmed fights, single sword, knife, and rapier, plus the physical control behind all manner of stunt and clown work. We will learn how to create a safe space for actors, and the language of safe and effective physical action on stage.

Guest artist Ambrose Ferber has been an actor since the age of five, and is an accredited combatant whose work includes fight direction for many productions of both stage and screen. He is currently based out of Santa Fe, and we are very lucky to have him joining us for this very special workshop just for Debut..
